Be #1 on Google First Page!

Be #1 on Google First Page!

“Just Google It” is a phrase that has entered our everyday conversation.

We search Google 3.5 billion times per day.

Over 2/3 of buyers user search when making a purchase decision. Often at the beginning of the process.

If you’re not there you WILL be losing out on business.

Having a website is the first step. Next is increasing your online visibility. Doing this requires SEO.

In fact, you need to understand the principles of SEO even if you are hiring an online marketing company to do this task for you.

The good news?

Higher rankings = better visibility = more enquiries

How does it work? How can SEO raise your online presence and give you an edge over your competitors?

These are common questions that come to mind when you hear the word SEO. There are tons of resources about it on the Internet. It is literally an endless rabbit hole you can fall into.

The web is full of clutter and you need to distinguish fact from fiction. In addition, you want a simplified guide about SEO so you can easily learn some tactics to use on your website.

What is the significance of SEO to your business?

Search Engine Optimisation is a tactic you can use to increasing your business website’s ranking. You can have the opportunity to rank on Google search’ first page if you know how to use this well.

Remember that you are up against a sea of websites. Your awesome content will remain invisible (no matter how valuable they are) if you do not employ the basics of SEO. You are practically non-existent if you are not on top of serps (search engine page results).

Though you need to understand, conducting an SEO campaign is not that simple. The web being in constant flux, Google has evolved since then. Its algorithm favours quality content over the spammy noise.

The name of the game today is earning Google’s “trust”. Proving yourself over time is the key. Though some can break the code, gone are the days when you can rank for a particular search term in just a matter of weeks. It is nearly next to impossible to manipulate the serps.

The Rise of the Three Algorithms

The Google Panda, Penguin and Pigeon are algorithms or formulas used by the search results for ranking sites. These algorithms will impose sanctions and penalise sites that fail to follow their guidelines.

The most common requirement these days is to have high quality and unique content on your site. We don’t discount the fact that having a website with exceptional user experience is always a factor in Google search rankings.

If you do not want to fall into Google’s bad graces, stay up-to-date with the latest guidelines. Usually, the updates are reported by the entire SEO community and discussed in several online forums.

If you want to know the latest on Google’s algorithm, check out Moz’ updates.

Getting started

Creating high quality content starts with good keyword research. This task will help you pinpoint the most ideal keyword/s for your content writing and optimisation efforts.

Note that the shorter the keyword/s, the harder it will be for you to rank it on serps. More so if your site is still new. It is advisable to target long-tail keywords as they are less competitive and far easier to rank.

How to find the right Long-Tail Keywords

You can find an ideal long-tail keyword through Google’s autosuggest feature. To use this, do the following:

  • Navigate to a search page for your country and type a keyword.
  • As you type the keyword, you will notice a drop-down box with some suggestions. Once you see the keyword suggestions, jot down all the keywords that you think is relevant to your content.
  • Choose at least 3 to 5 of the most suitable keywords you find in the autosuggest and head over to Google keyword planner. You can easily find this keyword tool by going to this link: https://adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner. It is advisable to create a Gmail account, so you can readily access the keyword planner without having to enter the Captcha code every time you use this tool. The keyword planner will provide you the following data:
  • Level of advertiser competition on your selected keywords
  • Amount of searches each keyword gets per month
  • Additional long-term keywords

An attractive primary keyword must have considerable average monthly searches. This is the average number of times people search for an exact match keyword based on their current location.

In Adwords tool, there is a column called competition. Each keyword is categorised as low, medium or high competition. Ignore that column because that is for advertisers and not search competition .

High competition keywords are usually more challenging to rank for in Google. Keep in mind that finding this type of keyword can take time, so be patient and conduct an in-depth search using the tool.

If you find Google’s Keyword Planner vexing, there are free keyword research tools out there. Try out Ubersuggest, SpyFu, SemRush, or all of them.

  • When you have completed your analysis, choose a primary keyword that you will use on your content. However, make sure that you have spent some time in analysing the keyword. It should be a keyword that you can compete for on the SERPs.

Creating and optimising your content

When you are creating content for your website, you must ensure that you meet the baseline specifications for a good optimised content. These specifications are as follows:

  • It must have one primary keyword and one or two secondary keywords
  • If it is an article or blog post, it should contain 500 words but a 1000-word article is recommended
  • It must be unique, well-researched and provide value to your readers

Another thing to consider is the on-page optimisation of the post within your site. Make sure that the primary keyword is in:

  • The page at least once
  • The title of the content
  • The URL of the page
  • The meta description
  • The alt title of image that you will use in the content

Now, what about the keyword density (KD)? Is it still relevant in 2015?

Most SEO specialists will tell you that 2% is the ideal KD; Others will justify that 5% has more weight in the eyes of the SERPs.  In reality, it all comes down to the amount of content on the page.

A 100-word article with a 6% keyword density will look spammy. For a 1000-word article, it is the ideal density for good rankings. The most important thing is that, it should be used in the most natural way as possible.

If you are using the WordPress platform, you can install an SEO plugin to make your job easier. You can use Yoast WordPress SEO plugin. It is free and contains several features that can aid your on-page optimisation efforts.

Quality Link Building

Moving your rankings up on search results require quality links. A word of caution, it is harder to rank highly for a particular keyword if you are competing against sites that have more quality links than yours.

Why is this? Links are the currency of the web. Every time your content gets linked to, it means that you provide massive value to Internet users. It is why links are such a strong factor in Google’s algorithm.

How to acquire quality links?

The general rule when it comes to link building is to avoid “spam tactics.”

Here are a few dos and don’ts to follow.

  • Do try to acquire links naturally, even if it takes time.
  • Do build your links consistently and organically, which means you should schedule your link building efforts and follow it by heart.
  • Do not use link farms or link directories in your campaign.
  • Do not use any automated tools that lets you build thousands of links in just a short period of time.
  • Do not be tempted to buy links or you will be flagged by Google. All your efforts will be for nothing if you get too impatient.

Where to get the link naturally?

To get quality links for your site, you can follow these link building strategies:

  • Guest Posting

What about Google Penguin 3.0 which is geared to penalised manipulative link building or link schemes? Guest posting is considered by Google as a link scheme. Matt Cutts openly declared it as dead.

Can you still consider it in your campaign?

Yes you can, if you use no follow links.

It is still the best way to acquire referral traffic from popular and relevant websites. Try to focus on creating quality content since you are reaching out to other website owners. Having quality content increases your chances of getting into high-authority and credible site.

  • Link Baiting

This is another effective method of building powerful links on a large scale. Is it as simple as producing valuable content? No, but you hit the right spot if you understand what people want.

To start off though, it must be free and shareable. It must be so valuable that people would be willing to share it.

There are different types of link bait and this can include the following:

  • Infographics
  • Beginner guides
  • Breaking News
  • Industry reports
  • How to guides
  • Top lists
  • Article Directories

Article submission is one of the most popular ways of building back links then. This is still useful as most article directories are authority sites. You can focus on creating multiple quality and unique articles and spread them out to different directories for best result.

  • Broken Link Building

This is a new but powerful effective link building strategy. With this strategy, you can reach out to quality sites and use it as an opportunity to ask the site administrator to fix those broken links with a link to your site.

  • Video Link Building

YouTube is surpassing Google search in terms of monthly searches. If you want to capture visitors from YouTube, create a compelling video with a link on the description that points back to your site. Make sure that the video and your description are related. Also, it does not need to be a long; a 3 to 10-minute video will do with useful information about your topic.

3 Secrets to a Great Web Design Project

Whether or not you’ve been part of a web design project, chances are you’ve at least heard someone’s opinion of their experience with one. It could be a song of praise about how awesome their new site turned out. Or it could be an hour long rant about how horrible XYZ design company was and how you had to restart your web project 139,859,393,294 times. Either way, both scenarios had essentially the same players, the same objectives and relatively the same process. So how can there be so much variance between design projects? Nir Barlev said it best in his article for Website Tool Tester titled: 8 Top Tips for a Smooth Relationship with your Web Design Client. In that article, Nir states that: “the main reason for a bad ‘client – web designer’ relationship is colliding expectations.” As a graphic designer who has been in the industry for about 8 years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly; and over this time, I’ve noticed some trends that tend to dictate whether or not you will have a pleasant experience or a stressful, drawn-out, troubling one. The misalignment of expectations is the number one killer of design projects. So how do you make sure both client and designer are on the same page? Here are my Secrets to a Great Web Design Project.

“the main reason for a bad ‘client – web designer’ relationship is colliding expectations.”
As a graphic designer who has been in the industry for about 8 years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the ugly; and over this time, I’ve noticed some trends that tend to dictate whether or not you will have a pleasant experience or a stressful, drawn-out, troubling one. The misalignment of expectations is the number one killer of design projects. So how do you make sure both client and designer are on the same page? Here are my Secrets to a Great Web Design Project.

1) Communication

The cornerstone of any great design project is communication. Without communication, your project is doomed from the start. Communication must be open and often, from the beginning of the project, until even after the project is finished.
From the client’s perspective, they usually have an idea of what they want in their heads. However, it is often hard for non-creative types of people to convey what they are envisioning. This could cause the entire project to get off on the wrong foot. My solution for this is to utilize a creative brief. As a designer, you can put one of these together to give clients at the beginning of the project to help guide them through the creative process. There are many different ways to accomplish this. You might use a free survey service like Survey Monkey. You create the questions that are most important and send them to your client. Have them fill out the survey as best they can and send it back. This will give you a lot of valuable information right from the start.
Another approach can be seen in Vari Longmuir’s article for Buttercup Ink titled 9 Steps to Creating a Killer Brief for your Graphic Designer. Here you can see some of the main concepts designers want to capture from the creative brief.
crystal-website-hosting-9-steps-to-creating-a-killer-brief-for-your-graphic-designer

I particularly like this list because it speaks in terms the client can understand? Everyone knows what type of store Target is and what kind Chanel is, right? It also specifically states what the goals of the client are, and what their expected deliverables are. Sending your client something like this is a big help at the beginning of a project and could bring their attention to important concepts they might not have thought of before.
But what about designers? As designers, we are the experts. Although we are not mind readers, we need to be able to effectively communicate with our clients, even if they are not the most creative types. This requires us to know what questions to ask how to guide the client through the creative process. Visuals are a big help. By utilizing visuals, you can help convey ideas to clients who would have a hard time picturing them otherwise. Coincidentally, clients can be a tremendous help to designers by providing examples of work they like or even dislike. Sometimes, knowing what types of style and design to stay away from, helps us reach a goal that surpasses the clients expectations.
And just for fun, here is a visual entitled "Translating Client Speak: An Infographics" by Plato Web Design to help out designers with some of the most common communication riddles that are found in client feedback:

So, now we all know how important communication is. Without an open forum of constant communication, ideas get convoluted and expectations get misaligned. Starting with a candid conversation at the beginning of the project and carrying it through to the end will ensure a successful launch of your new website or redesign.

2) Have a plan

Having a plan goes far beyond knowing the ultimate goal. Having a plan means both client and designer have a clear understanding of the steps it will take to reach that final goal. What are the different phases of the project? Who’s responsibility is it to provide content? Images? When will the wireframe be delivered? Better yet, what the heck’s a wireframe?
All of these issues can cause real havoc in your project if you don’t know how to address them. That’s why drawing out each step of the process and setting firm timelines ensures not only that the project stays on track, but that there are no surprises that pop up to throw a wrench in your plan. The best way to accomplish this is to deliver a design brief to your client. A good design brief can not only provide all the project information and expectations on paper, but its a perfect opportunity to showcase the professionalism and design skill of your company. It is also good practice to include the design brief as part of your contract. A good design brief should have the following elements:
Establish points of contact (main POC, subject matter experts, etc.)
  • Website Objectives
  • What are the main challenges and goals for this website?
  • What does success look like for this website?
  • What does failure look like for this website?
SMART Goal Creation
  • What are the Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely goals of this website?
Are there current goals set in place for the website?
  • Traffic? Leads? Customers? Revenue?
Website Overview
  • Sitemap - Content - Imagery - Stylesheet
Timeline
  • Comps - When is the first round of designs due? Is it just the homepage or are sub pages included in the first round of deliverables as well?
  • Revisions - How long is the revision period? How many revisions are there? What can be included in the revision process?
  • Imagery / Content - When is final content and imagery due? Who provides what? Are there any additional costs involved?
  • Testing - When will testing begin? How long will testing last? What will be tested?
  • Launch - What is the launch date? Any redirects necessary?
  • Next Steps - What happens after launch? What sort of follow up is required? Any ongoing maintenance or additional work?
Credentials
  • Any domain, hosting, social or other credentials necessary to complete the project.
SEO
  • If SEO will be part of the project, what considerations will be taken during the design and development of the site to ensure good optimization practices?

3) Content is King

content-king.png
Let's recap: communication is mandatory and we all need to be clear on the course of action. But without quality content, it doesn’t matter how great all your initial ideas are and chances are you will not be happy with the finished product. That’s why content is so important. This is not a new concept. Back in 2013 Search Engine Land wrote an article about the change in Google’s algorithm from emphasizing the sites that link back to your site, to creating quality sites that users will want to use and share. This requires you to have relevant content and impactful imagery.
Now nobody knows the business better than those who run it; they play a very important part in determining what content makes it onto the site. Unfortunately, this is the least fun part of the project and that which takes the most time. So it is often hurried and leaves the most room for improvement. Your content must ALWAYS be targeted to your target buyer personas. Every aspect of your content should focus on solving for your customers. Don’t worry about filling the pages with how great a company you have. Worry about providing valuable information that answers some of your customers common questions.  If I could give one word of advice to clients looking to have a web redesign, it is to invest a great deal of time and money if necessary, into producing quality content. This may be having a photographer come into the business to take some professional photos of the staff, location, and activities. Or it might be hiring a professional content writer to write the verbiage for the site. Either way, the investment you make in having quality content will have the greatest ROI of any aspect in your web design project.

So that’s it! Those are the three biggest keys to a successful web design project. By maintaining an open dialogue from the beginning, where you ask questions and provide feedback throughout the process, you will make sure that expectations are aligned and both designer and client are heading toward the same objective. Before starting down that path, having a roadmap or guide that tells you exactly who, what, when, where, how and why will make sure that you don’t wander off course and blow both your timeline and budget. Finally, by contributing a little extra effort to your content, you can be sure that the final product is something that shines. The imagery is relevant to the content and the content is relevant to your buyer personas. Thus, converting visitors and determining the close of a successful project.

The 7 Elements of Modern Web Design with www.crystalwebsitehosting.com

crystalwebsitehosting-com-top-webhosting-company-in-uganda-kenya-USA-rwanda-south-sudan

Every year, we see new website design elements emerge. Even though it may not be necessary to include all of them, the more you can incorporate into your next redesign, the better your new website will be.
You may be asking yourself: But what are the latest features to include? And what elements are important to my website? Well, we're here to help.
Here is your guide to seven important elements of modern web design that you can include. You don't need to have all of them, but this list will get you started.

Element #1: Unique Typography

We discussed the value of typography in our post about web design trends, but let's review its value again.
Most companies have a particular family, style, and size of a font, or typography, that they used that helps their customers immediately identify them versus their competitors. In recent years the selection of fonts that they can use on their website has grown. Designers can have a broader selection of fonts to choose from on their websites.
The New Yorker's typography is recognized by consumers around the world because of its unique style and appearance.

crystalwebsitehosting-com-thenewyorker-top-website-hosting-companies-in-uganda-kenya-london

Why is it useful?

Typography uses one design trend across the website that helps lead readers to different parts of the website. For instance, the New Yorker website leads visitors from one section to another based on the typography and font sizes.
When creating your company's brand, it is important to consider the typography. This allows readers to immediately identify your website and brand.

Element #2: Flat Design

Flat design is known for its simplistic appearance. Instead of using three-dimensional effects and other design techniques, flat designs use simple illustrations that typically have bright colors.
Let's take Wistia's website for example. As you can see, there is a minimalistic look to it that focuses on the content instead of the design. However, the flat design makes the site look clean and slick.

Why is it useful?

Flat design focuses on a company's content. It allows the website visitors to get right to the point by putting an emphasis on the content over other design features that make a website "fancy."
Additionally, flat design uses a minimalistic style making the website appear cleaner with more white space. More designers are creating websites with more whitespace to keep the focus on the content and "meat" of the website instead of overloading websites with design elements.

Element #3: Hover Effects

Hover effects help you identify where you are on a page. When you place your cursor over a part of a website that has a hover effect, it usually changes colors or highlights letting you know where you are looking.
Let's take a look at an example with the AmeriFirst Home Mortgage website. When you scroll over the navigation bar or even some of the buttons below, the different buttons change colors letting you know where you are on the site. In this case, when I put my cursor over "Buying a Home," it changed to a lighter color.

crystalwebsitehosting-com-thenewyorker-top-website-hosting-companies-in-uganda-kenya-london-kampala-martin-road

Why is it useful?

Hover effects are a great tool to help with a user's experience. The design isn't intrusive, yet it helps website visitors keep track of where they are looking on a page.

Element #4: Scroll to Page Sections

Some websites have a feature where you click a link and it brings you to a different part of the page. For instance, UrbanBound uses this technique on their website. Let's take a look.
The navigation on UrbandBound's website links to the most important information that they want their website visitors to look at. Let's say you are interested in their success stories. When you click that link, it slowly scrolls you down to the section of the page that discusses success stories.

When you are on the Success Stories part of the page, it also highlights the text in the navigation so that you know where you are. It also keeps the navigation the same so you have the option to scroll to other parts of the page.

Why is it useful?

Scrolling is a better option for a visitor's usability.
First, instead of clicking from one page to another to get all of the information, you have everything on one page. That means there is no need for multiple pages to load to get the content you are looking for, and usually the content is in the order that makes the most sense for the website visitor. So all you have to do is scroll from section to section to gather all of the information you need.
It's also advantageous for visitors who have come to the website before. They may be looking for one piece of information they saw previously, and with scrolling, they can get to the section of the website page where it exists easier and quicker.

Element #5: Giant Product Images

You may have noticed that many B2B websites are starting to display large product images on their sites to highlight different features or parts of their product. This element is another important design tactic that we are seeing more and more.
Let's take a look at HubSpot's product page on the Content Optimization System (COS) for instance. As you can see in the three examples below, there are large images of different parts of the product on this page. The images are also responsive which is important for viewers coming from different devices. We'll go over the importance of responsiveness in a later element.

crystalwebsitehosting-com-bwaise-natete-ndeba-mukono-kawempe-katoka-matoka-luwero-namirebe-road
second image, you will notice that there are numbers on the image corresponding with benefits of certain features.
It also keeps the visitor thinking about the product with the visuals. We are bound to skim over a lot of text, but with the large product images, we are able to get a solid idea of what the different product features do and convey it through images instead of words.

Element #6: In-Depth Product Videos

In addition to large product images, companies are also beginning to use in-depth product videos to talk about the benefits of their products as well as new features that come out.
A prime example: General Electric uses numerous videos on their homepage to give information about their products.
crystalwebsitehosting-com-bwaise-natete-ndeba-mukono-kawempe-katoka-matoka-luwero-generalelectric_video1-1

Why is it useful?

According to Inc. Magazine, 92% of B2B customers watch online video and 43% of B2B customers watch online video when researching products and services for their business. B2B companies, therefore, need to create videos that explain their products in detail because it is influential in the buyer's decision-marketing process.
In-depth product videos also allow B2B companies to take the reigns on the parts of the product that they think their prospects will value the most. By showing step-by-step videos that walk through the process of how to use their products, they will also be able to easily explain how to use their products. There are benefits to customer service as well as usability in the product videos.

Element #7: Large, Responsive Images

In the up-and-coming design trends post, we also discussed having large photo backgrounds. But what we didn't discuss was the importance of making these images responsive.
Large responsive images conform to any screen size whether you are viewing the image from your desktop, tablet, or mobile device. That means that you will be able to view the image clearly without scrolling up and down and side to side.
Uber's website uses the trend of a large photo background as well as the design element of making it responsive. Let's check out the website on a desktop computer and mobile device.
Desktop:

crystalwebsitehosting-com-bwaise-natete-ndeba-mukono-kawempe-katoka-matoka-luwero-ntinda

Why is it useful?

Your customers are coming from all over the place. You may not be sure if they are finding your website from their phone, tablet, or desktop computer. The image that Uber uses above is extremely powerful, but if it was only visible from desktop computers, many people may miss it.
Ensuring your images are responsive makes for a good user experience. Website visitors can look at different images whether they are the background or product images on a page and be able to get the same experience no matter what device they are coming from. This is extremely important, as more and more people aren't using desktop computers to find out information about different companies.
